Maha Kumbh Mela: Origin of the Kumbh Mela

The Kumbh Mela finds its roots in an ancient Hindu myth. The gods and demons brewed the ocean of milk in order to obtain amrita, immortal nectar. Durning the battle for the drops of amrita, variations of other sacred locations emerged including Prayagraj, Haridwar, Ujjain and Nashik. With the hope that during these times their soul would be purified to reach a level of spiritual enlightenment.

Attendees claim that the act of bathing in the holy water of the river during the festive period of the season holy cleanses their spirit, freeing them from all the sins they have committed. Many believe that the conjunction of different planets during this time increases the spiritual energy that is present at the place, which boosts the blessings received. This is an occasion or a chance to seek the company of saints and sages so that one can seek the guidance and inspiration which they have to give. It brings together people from all sections of society, restoring their spirituality and sense of togetherness. This is a period of pensive worship during which, together with millions of other worshippers, the individual is fortunate enough to witness the supreme being.
